Bird Type: Bantam (page 1 of 1)

A bantam is a small or miniature breed of chicken. Some bantams are naturally tiny versions of standard large fowl (called miniature bantams), while others, like Sebrights and Pekin bantams, exist only as small breeds with no large fowl counterpart.

Bantams usually weigh around 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 1 kg) and are popular for showing, small gardens, and as pets because they eat less, need less space, and often have lively personalities.

Silver Laced Wyandotte Bantam

Silver Laced Wyandotte Bantam . American Manmade Bantam

The Wyandotte seems to have been developed in the States in around 1870 and introduced into Britain in about 1883. Silver Laced is believed to be the original colour but this has expanded now into every colour imaginable. Our original stock came from two or 3 breeders, but we have recently added some new blood with two beautiful cockerels.

Rhode Island Red Bantam

Rhode Island Red Bantam  American Manmade breed.

As the name suggests these birds were originally bred in the New England Rhode Island area of the USA. By chicken farmers looking to produce a bird that could satisfy the growing demand for both eggs and chicken meat from the nearby growing urban populations. Due to their origins these birds stand up well to cold wet winters in the UK and make great garden birds for the home hobby chicken keeper

Light Sussex Bantam

Once again, this breed is believed to have its origines in Kent maybe surrey but defiantly the South East of England. It is one of the largest Bantam breeds and is sometimes referred to as not a “true” bantam. They like their larger counterparts are a dual-purpose bird traditionally kept for both meat and eggs. We believe these are still one of the best birds for the small chicken keeper. As they are very hardy and easy to look after. They are also happy to forage come rain or shine.
